Samut Prakan
Samut Prakan sits where the Chao Phraya meets the Gulf of Thailand — Bangkok's industrial southern flank, but with a few gems. The Erawan Museum is unmissable: a massive three-headed elephant sculpture that you can actually walk inside, filled with art and artifacts across multiple floors representing the Buddhist cosmos. Ancient Siam (Muang Boran) nearby is a sprawling open-air museum with replica Thai monuments at 1:3 scale — it's tourist-oriented but genuinely impressive if you can't travel to every province.
Bang Pu Recreation Center is a popular birdwatching spot where migratory seagulls gather November through April. The Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm is one of the world's largest. For something more authentic, the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market in the Bang Kachao area (Bangkok's "green lung," which technically sits in Samut Prakan) offers weekend cycling and a peaceful canal-side market. The province is essentially Greater Bangkok with cheaper accommodation and a few worthwhile attractions.
