Chinatown Bangkok (Yaowarat)

Neon, woks, and queues: Yaowarat is Bangkok’s street‑food strip. Start at Wat Mangkon MRT, graze T&K Seafood and Nai Ek’s peppery guay jub, snag toasted buns, and finish with mango sago at Sweet Time. Best 6pm–late; ~10‑minute taxi from Khao San.

About

By day, Yaowarat is all gold shops and traditional pharmacies; by night, the neon comes on and the woks roar. Bangkok’s Chinatown stretches along Yaowarat Road in Samphanthawong, a quick 10-minute taxi from Khao San (traffic permitting) or one stop from Hua Lamphong on the MRT Blue Line to Wat Mangkon. The smartest move is to arrive hungry after 6pm, when the pavement turns into a mile-long food court under a forest of Chinese signs. Work your way from the Chinatown Gate at Odeon Circle toward Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, ducking into side alleys like Soi Texas (Phadung Dao) where grills flare and steamers hiss. Queue up at T&K Seafood (green shirts) for crab fried rice and grilled prawns, or cross to their rivals in red. For something classic and comforting, head to Nai Ek Roll Noodles for peppery guay jub (rolled rice noodles with crispy pork) — they’re popularly reported open until midnight most nights. Save space for the famous Yaowarat toasted buns (often from mid‑afternoon until early evening) and a sweet finish at Sweet Time — think mango sago or warm ginger soup with sesame dumplings. Expect street-stall prices for most dishes (around 60–120 THB), with seafood platters running higher. If you come earlier, explore Sampeng Lane’s wholesale maze and the herbal and bird’s nest shops along Charoen Krung. Nights are busiest Friday and Saturday from about 7–10pm; go early or late to beat the crush. Bring small bills, wear light clothes, and follow your nose — smoke, sizzling garlic, and the chatter of chopsticks are all part of the show. When you’re done, hop the Chao Phraya Express at Ratchawong Pier or grab a tuk-tuk back toward the Old Town.
