Wat Bowonniwetwiharn Ratchaworawiharn

Royal monastery on Phra Sumen Rd, a short walk from Khao San. Home to the 14th‑century Phra Phuttha Chinnasi Buddha and a gleaming chedi. Quiet, photogenic grounds; best in the morning. Open daily 6:30am–4pm.

About

A first-class royal temple on Phra Sumen Road in Banglamphu, Wat Bowonniwetwiharn is a 5-minute walk from Khao San Road. Entry is free; cover shoulders and knees. It’s the seat of the Thammayut order, and both King Mongkut (Rama IV) and King Bhumibol (Rama IX) ordained here. Inside, the calm courtyard leads to a gilded chedi and the main ubosot with the revered Phra Phuttha Chinnasi Buddha and rare murals by Khrua In Khong using Western perspective. Go early for cool air and soft chanting, or late afternoon for warm light. Expect a respectful mix of locals and travelers, donation boxes by the door, and shoes off at the threshold.
