Som tum lung prabang restaurant
Banglamphu som tam shop known for Luang Prabang–style papaya ribbons pounded to order. Go Lao-style with plaa raa, add grilled chicken and sticky rice, and you’re out for ~60–100 THB a plate — perfect pre-Khao San fuel.
About
If you crave proper Isaan heat around Khao San, this no-frills papaya-salad shop hits the spot. The draw is tam Luang Prabang — green papaya shaved into wide, crunchy ribbons, then pounded with lime, chilies, palm sugar and fish sauce. Ask for it Lao-style with a splash of plaa raa (fermented fish) if you like it funky, or keep it clean and bright. The thud of mortars never stops, and plates fly out fast.
Regulars build a table around the salad: grilled chicken or pork, som tum with salted crab, sticky rice to mop up the dressing, maybe a bowl of tom saep if you’re feeling bold. Spice is dialed to order, from a gentle 2–3 chilies to tongue-tingling. Expect simple seating, cold drinks, and quick turnover — ideal for a late lunch or a pre-bar bite before you wander back toward Khao San.
Most salads land in the 60–100 THB range with add-ons a bit more, so you can eat well without denting the beer fund. It’s a casual, come-as-you-are spot that does the basics right and the Luang Prabang-style som tam even better.
