Wat Si Chum
Sukhothai’s icon: a 15‑meter seated Buddha framed by a slit‑walled mondop. Open daily 7:30am–5pm; northern zone ticket is 100 THB (last checked Mar 2026). Go early for soft light, and bring a small torch to spot the Jataka engravings in the inner passage.
About
Wat Si Chum is the image you’ve probably seen before: a colossal seated Buddha, serene and pale, revealed through the narrow slit of a roofless mondop. Step inside and the scale hits — the fingers alone are the length of your forearm, delicately gilded by generations of devotees. Cicadas hum, leaves crackle underfoot, and a slice of sky frames the Buddha’s calm face for photos that don’t need a filter.
You’ll find Wat Si Chum in the northern zone of Sukhothai Historical Park, a flat, easy bike ride from the central monuments. It’s open daily 7:30am–5pm; the northern zone ticket is 100 THB for visitors (last verified March 2026). Go early for soft light and quiet, or late afternoon when the stone warms to gold. Bring water and dress respectfully — this is still an active place of worship.
Look for the name Phra Achana, the Buddha enshrined here. Tucked inside the thick laterite walls is a narrow passage with ancient Jataka engravings; a small torch helps you pick out the details. If you’re cycling, combine it with nearby Wat Phra Phai Luang and Wat Si Sawai before looping back toward the central ponds at sunset.
