Wat Phra Kaew

Bangkok’s holiest temple inside the Grand Palace. Go early (8:30am–3:30pm). Buy the 500 THB ticket at Na Phra Lan Rd gate. Dress code enforced. Marvel at Ramakien murals and the tiny Emerald Buddha whose robes change with the seasons. 10–15 minutes’ walk from Khao San.

About

Wat Phra Kaew is the spiritual heart of Thailand, set inside the Grand Palace on Na Phra Lan Road, just across Sanam Luang and an easy walk from Khao San. Step through the gate and the noise drops away: gilded stupas catch the sun, mirror mosaics flicker, and the cloister walls wrap you in scenes from the Ramakien. At the center sits the Emerald Buddha, small but commanding on its tiered throne, its gold robes changed with the seasons by the King. It’s open daily 8:30am–3:30pm, but go early to beat the heat and the tour buses. Tickets are sold at the main entrance on Na Phra Lan Road; the standard foreigner ticket (last checked Mar 2026) is 500 THB and includes access to the Grand Palace grounds and associated exhibits. Dress code is strictly enforced: shoulders and knees covered; sarongs are available to rent if you’re caught short. If you have time, linger in the galleries to trace the Ramakien murals end to end and watch the light change on the golden chedis. Circle the Phra Mondop library, peek at the guardian yaksha statues, and then slip back out toward the river for a ferry or over Sanam Luang toward Khao San for a late lunch. This is the one Bangkok sight that still feels regal if you time it right.
