Wat Chong Klang

Mae Hong Son’s lakeside stunner: a Shan-style temple mirrored in Nong Chong Kham. Come for golden hour, pair it with neighboring Wat Chong Kham and the nightly 5pm market, then snack along the promenade. Open daily 7am–6pm.

About

Wat Chong Klang is one half of Mae Hong Son’s postcard view — a graceful Shan (Tai Yai)–style temple right on the shore of Nong Chong Kham Lake. By day you’ll spot its white-and-gold chedi and delicate tiered roofs reflected in the water; by late afternoon, the light softens and the whole lakeside glows. Walk the promenade, step inside the viharn to admire the Burmese-influenced details, and listen to the slow rhythm of town life carry across the water. It sits shoulder-to-shoulder with its sibling, Wat Chong Kham, and the pair anchor the small night market that sparks up around the lake every evening from about 5pm. Come for golden hour photos, then circle the food stalls for grilled pork skewers, bowls of khao soi, and hot tea with a view. Most travelers swing up to Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu for sunset first and drift back here as the lights come on and the temples shimmer in the lake — an easy, pretty circuit in the center of town. Practical bits: the temple is an easy stroll from anywhere around the lake on Chamnan Sathit Road. Doors are typically open daily 7am–6pm. Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering buildings, and keep voices low — this is an active place of worship, not just a photo stop.
