Rong Suea Ten Temple
Chiang Rai’s Blue Temple stuns in electric cobalt and gold. Walk past naga guardians to a snow‑white Buddha glowing under deep‑blue murals. Free entry, 7am–8pm — go early or at sunset to dodge the buses. 10 minutes from the Clock Tower in Rim Kok.
About
The Blue Temple lives up to its nickname. From the moment you step past the sinuous naga guardians on Maekok Road, everything goes electric cobalt and gold — gleaming rooflines, glass-inlaid trim, and a riot of carved detail that catches the late-afternoon light. Inside, a serene snow‑white Buddha sits against a deep-blue backdrop, with murals that make phone cameras work overtime. It’s dazzling, but not just for show; locals still come to make merit, light incense, and leave quiet offerings.
You’ll find Rong Suea Ten in Rim Kok, on the north side of the Kok River — about a 10‑minute Grab from Chiang Rai’s Clock Tower. Entry is free (donations welcome), and the grounds are open daily 7am–8pm, but timing matters. Go early morning before the tour buses roll in, or aim for golden hour when the blues glow and the naga scales sparkle for photos. Modest dress is expected, though there’s a relaxed, come-and-wander energy compared to older temples in town.
Circle the viharn to spot playful details — guardian demons tucked into corners, gilded motifs, and a striking standing Buddha at the rear hall. Street stalls outside sell coconut ice cream and cold drinks, useful backup on hot days before you hop over to nearby cafes along the river. If you’re temple-hopping, pair it with the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and Black House (Baan Dam) for Chiang Rai’s modern art trilogy in one day.
