Phuket old town

Phuket’s prettiest streets: pastel Sino‑Portuguese shophouses, street art and Sunday’s Lard Yai market (4pm–9pm+) on Thalang Rd. Go early or late for golden light, graze on 30–100 THB street eats, and detour down Soi Romanee for the money shot.

About

Phuket Old Town is the island’s historic heart — a compact grid of pastel Sino‑Portuguese shophouses, Chinese shrines, and shaded five‑foot walkways. Start on Thalang Road and work your way across Dibuk, Krabi, Phang Nga and Yaowarat to see the best‑restored facades, tiled archways and carved teak doors. It’s an easy half‑day from the beaches (about 30–45 minutes by car from Patong), and a welcome change of pace when you’ve had your fill of surf and sun. If you can, go on Sunday evening when Thalang Road turns into the Lard Yai walking street market from around 4pm to 9pm (often later). The road closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, indie crafts and buskers — think grilled pork skewers, roti, coconut ice cream and fresh fruit shakes for 30–100 THB. Duck into a side lane for a beer or iced latte when it gets crowded, then rejoin the flow near the yellow clock tower for live music and people‑watching. By day, wander Soi Romanee — the tiny lane between Thalang and Dibuk — for those candy‑colored facades you’ve seen on Instagram. Hunt for the street‑art murals around Phang Nga and Krabi Roads, or step inside the Thai Hua Museum to trace Phuket’s Peranakan roots. Coffee culture runs strong here; you’ll find old‑school kopitiams next to modern espresso bars, and plenty of air‑con breaks when the heat kicks in. Insider tip: the light is best early morning or late afternoon when the colors glow and the sidewalks aren’t baking. If a tropical shower rolls through, wait it out — the streets shine and the photos get even better. Last checked March 2026.
