National Museum Bangkok
Thailand’s story in one stop: royal funeral chariots, the Buddhaisawan Chapel’s murals and Phra Buddha Sihing, plus halls of khon masks and musical instruments. 10‑minute walk from Khao San. Open Wed–Sun, 8:30am–4pm.
About
A short, easy walk from Khao San, the National Museum spreads across 18th‑century palace halls on Na Phra That Road, just behind Sanam Luang. Step through the gate and you’re in Thailand’s grand attic: royal funeral chariots lacquered in gold leaf, Ayutthaya‑era Buddha images, and cabinets that glow with mother‑of‑pearl inlay.
Save time for the Buddhaisawan Chapel, whose walls bloom with Ramakien‑style murals around the revered Phra Buddha Sihing image. Nearby galleries trace Thai art and daily life — khon masks and shadow puppets, gongs and fiddles you’ll hear at temple fairs, ceramics from Sukhothai kilns, court costumes, even weaponry and royal steles.
Go early to beat the heat and the tour groups. Doors open at 8:30am Wednesday to Sunday; most halls start to quiet after lunch. From Khao San, cut across the grass of Sanam Luang and you’ll be there in about 10 minutes. Exhibits are well‑labeled in Thai and English, and the shady courtyards make a good pause between halls.
