About

If you need a breather from Chiang Mai’s motorbikes and markets, slip through the main gate of Chiang Mai University and follow the path to Angkaew Reservoir. A ring of water mirrors the forested slope of Doi Suthep, and a flat lakeside path loops past benches, lawns and shady trees. Sunrise brings soft light and birdsong; at sunset the mountain turns gold and the campus crowd settles in with snacks and cameras. It’s an easy escape on the western edge of town, just off Huay Kaew Road and minutes from Nimman. Come early for a quiet jog before the heat, or stroll in the late afternoon when students, families and runners share the path. Pack a picnic or grab a coffee from the campus kiosks and sit on the grass as the sky goes pink. Entry is free and the gates are open 5:00am–10:00pm daily. Regulars link the reservoir loop with nearby campus lanes for a longer run, or wander toward the arboretum on the north side for more shade and birds. However you do it, Angkaew is where Chiang Mai slows down for an hour—water, mountain, and the kind of calm you remember long after you’ve left.
