What is Mango Sticky Rice?
Khao niao mamuang is glutinous rice steamed, then soaked in coconut milk sweetened with sugar and seasoned with salt, served warm next to sliced ripe mango — usually the fragrant Nam Dok Mai variety.
A spoon of thicker salted coconut cream goes over the top, often with crunchy fried mung beans.
It is best in hot season (roughly March to June) when mangoes are at their peak, though Bangkok’s famous stalls sell it year-round.
Regional versions
Some shops colour the rice blue with butterfly pea flower or green with pandan.
How to order it
Most stalls sell by the box; ask for “kati perm” for extra coconut cream.
