Southern Thailand

Two coastlines, two characters. The Andaman side — Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Trang — serves up the dramatic limestone karst scenery, world-class diving (Similan and Surin Islands), and beaches that define tropical paradise. Railay's cliffs, Phi Phi's bays, and Koh Lipe's coral reefs are the marquee attractions, but quieter islands like Koh Yao Noi, Koh Muk, and Koh Lanta reward those who venture past the obvious. The Gulf side — Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Tao — delivers the party (Full Moon Party), the diving (Koh Tao is the world's cheapest PADI factory), and increasingly, the luxury.

On the mainland, Khao Sok's ancient rainforest and floating bungalows are a must. The upper south — Chumphon, Ranong, Nakhon Si Thammarat — has authentic coastal culture without resort prices. Further south, the deep south provinces (Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat) bring Malay-Muslim culture, distinct cuisine, and a different identity entirely. Southern Thai food — heavier on turmeric, coconut, fresh seafood, and heat — is its own cuisine, with Trang's dim sum culture and Phuket's Baba fusion adding local flavor. The Andaman season runs November through April; the Gulf coast peaks January through September.
