Yala

Yala is Thailand's southernmost province on the mainland and one of its most culturally distinct — predominantly Malay Muslim with a language and identity closely tied to Malaysia's Kelantan and Perak states. The Betong district, at the very tip of Thailand, has reinvented itself as a tourist draw: the sea of fog viewpoint at Aiyerweng skywalk, a new landmark accessible by a winding mountain road, draws visitors for sunrise above the clouds. Betong also has hot springs, an extensive tunnel system from the Communist insurgency era, and excellent Malay-Chinese fusion food.

Yala city is the most modern and well-planned city in the deep south, with grid streets, parks, and a large central lake. Wat Khuhaphimuk (Wat Na Tham), with a 24-meter reclining Buddha inside a cave, is the province's main Buddhist temple. The Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary (shared with Narathiwat) protects critical lowland rainforest. Travel advisories apply to parts of the province due to the southern insurgency, though Betong is generally considered safe and has seen significant tourism investment.
