Uthai Thani
Uthai Thani is a hidden gem in central Thailand — a small province where the flat rice plains meet the first hills of the western mountains, blessed with some of the country's best-preserved forests. The Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Southeast Asia's most important protected areas — tigers, elephants, and gaur roam forests that have never been logged. Access is restricted and requires permits, but it's a draw for serious wildlife enthusiasts.
The provincial capital is built along the Sakae Krang River with atmospheric old wooden shophouses and a floating temple community. Wat Tha Sung (Wat Chantharam), a forest monastery on the outskirts, is a minor wonder — the interior of the ordination hall is covered floor to ceiling in crystal, glass, and mirrored mosaic, creating a dazzling kaleidoscope effect. Wat Uposatharam (Wat Bot), perched on a cliff above the river, offers peaceful views. The surrounding countryside is agricultural and unhurried, and the province is virtually unknown to foreign tourists.
