Suphan Buri

Suphan Buri is best known as the birthplace of Thailand's greatest warrior king — the legend of King Naresuan, who liberated Siam from Burmese rule, is celebrated at the Don Chedi Monument where the famous elephant-back duel supposedly took place. The annual Don Chedi Fair (late January) reenacts the battle with elaborate costumes and mock combat.

Beyond the history, Suphan Buri has a surprisingly good zoo — the Bueng Chawak Aquarium and nearby open zoo are popular family attractions. Dragon Temple (Wat Tha Sung) features a massive golden dragon wrapped around a tower. Sam Chuk Old Market, along the Tha Chin River, is a beautifully restored 100-year-old wooden market town that's become a weekend destination for Bangkokians — vintage shops, traditional sweets, and coffee in converted shophouses. The Bird Park at Bueng Chawak wetland is a solid birdwatching spot. Suphan Buri combines well with a central Thailand loop through Kanchanaburi and Nakhon Pathom.
