Samut Songkhram
Samut Songkhram is Thailand's smallest province but packs an outsized punch. The Maeklong Railway Market (Talad Rom Hub) is the headline act — vendors literally fold up their stalls eight times daily as a train squeezes through the market, inches from the produce. It's as dramatic as it looks in videos. Amphawa Floating Market, a few kilometers away, is the best floating market near Bangkok: evening boat rides through firefly-lit canals, temples on the water, and grilled seafood on boats.
The province is crisscrossed by canals (khlongs) that were once the main transport network, and boat tours through the coconut palm-lined waterways feel like time travel. Wat Bang Kung houses a Buddha image inside a living banyan tree that has consumed the chapel — its roots and trunk form the walls and roof. The salt farms along the coast still harvest sea salt using traditional methods, and the pomelo orchards produce fruit famous across Thailand. King Rama II Memorial Park celebrates the poet-king born here. The whole province can be covered in a day from Bangkok but deserves an overnight.
