Samut Sakhon

Samut Sakhon — known as Mahachai — is a fishing port province wedged between Bangkok and the Gulf. The central Mahachai market is one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand: mountains of prawns, blue crabs, and fish hauled in from the boats moored just meters away. Prices are wholesale-level, and the surrounding restaurants serve seafood as fresh as it gets.

The province has a significant Thai-Chinese community, and the Mahachai area's Chinese shrines and festivals give it character. Wat Yai Chom Prasat, the provincial temple on the Mae Klong River, dates back centuries. The real charm is the working waterfront — fishing trawlers, ice factories, and net-mending scenes that feel worlds away from nearby Bangkok. A longtail boat ride through the canals and mangrove-fringed coast reveals stilt villages and shrimp farms.
