Phetchaburi

Phetchaburi (Phetburi) is a sleeper hit — a historic town with exquisite cave temples, hilltop palaces, and some of Thailand's best traditional desserts. Tham Khao Luang, a royal cave temple with shafts of sunlight illuminating dozens of Buddha images, is genuinely breathtaking and less visited than it deserves. The hilltop Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang) palace complex, built by Rama IV, offers panoramic views and a charming cable-car ride.

The old town has some of the finest traditional Thai architecture in the country: Wat Yai Suwannaram's murals are 300+ years old and perfectly preserved, and Wat Kamphaeng Laeng incorporates Khmer-era laterite ruins. Phetchaburi is the undisputed capital of Thai sweets — khanom maw kaeng (custard), foi thong (golden threads), and other desserts made with palm sugar from the province's own palm plantations. Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand's largest, sprawls across the western mountains with wild elephants, clouded leopards, and morning mist viewpoints. Cha-am beach, at the southern edge, is where Bangkok families weekend before the Hua Hin prices kick in.
