Nong Khai

Nong Khai is where Thailand meets Laos — the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge crosses the Mekong to Vientiane, making it one of the most popular border crossings in Southeast Asia. The riverside promenade is the soul of the city: sunset drinks with Laos shimmering across the water, French-Lao baguette vendors, and a riverside walking street market on Saturday evenings. Sala Kaew Ku (Wat Khaek), a bizarre sculpture park filled with massive concrete Hindu-Buddhist statues, is wonderfully weird and unlike anything else in Thailand.

The Naga Fireballs phenomenon on the Mekong each October (during Ok Phansa) draws huge crowds — glowing orbs reportedly rise from the river, and whether you believe the science or the legend, the atmosphere is electric. Tha Bo district is known for spring roll wrappers drying on bamboo racks — the entire village seems to be producing them. Phu Wiang and the surrounding countryside offer quiet cycling and Mekong-side homestays. Nong Khai also serves as the launching point for Isan's Mekong trail eastward through Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, and Mukdahan.
