Narathiwat

Narathiwat is Thailand's southernmost province on the Gulf coast, bordering Malaysia's Kelantan state. The culture here is predominantly Malay Muslim, and the atmosphere — mosques, Jawi script on signs, women in headscarves — feels distinct from the rest of Thailand. The provincial capital's Kolae boat-building tradition produces beautifully painted fishing boats, and the Narathat Beach stretching south of town is long, quiet, and undeveloped.

The main tourist draw is the border crossing to Sungai Kolok, a small Thai-Malaysian trade town with a busy market. Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, deep in the mountains near the Malaysian border, protects some of the last lowland rainforest on the peninsula — hornbills are the marquee species. The cultural highlight is Wat Chontara Sing He, a southern Thai Buddhist temple in an overwhelmingly Malay-Muslim province, showcasing the region's complex identity.
