Nakhon Sawan

Nakhon Sawan sits at the symbolic confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers, which merge here to form the Chao Phraya — Thailand's lifeline. Bung Boraphet, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater swamp, sprawls across the province and offers boat tours through lotus fields and birdwatching hides. The lakeside park is popular with locals for evening jogs and the floating restaurant is a pleasant dinner spot.

The provincial capital is a prosperous market town with a significant Chinese-Thai population, and the Chinese New Year celebrations here are among the most elaborate in Thailand, featuring dragon parades, street performances, and fireworks. Khao Kop hill offers a 360-degree view of the river confluence from a hilltop temple. Wat Khiriwong at the base of the hill has a massive seated Buddha. The town's night market along the riverside is excellent for central Thai food. Nakhon Sawan is more of a transit point than a destination, but the Bung Boraphet wetlands and Chinese New Year festivities are genuinely worth a detour.
