Kamphaeng Phet
Kamphaeng Phet's UNESCO-listed historical park is the main event — and it's dramatically under-visited compared to Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. The walled city ruins include massive laterite Buddha statues, crumbling chedis, and forest-engulfed temple foundations spread across two distinct zones. The Aranyik area, set among tall trees, has an atmospheric quality that the more manicured parks can't match. The on-site museum is small but well-curated.
The modern town is a pleasant Ping River settlement with a bustling night market and good northern Thai food. Khlong Lan National Park about an hour west has a powerful 100-meter waterfall and primary rainforest. Kamphaeng Phet province is also known for banana cultivation — Kluai Khai (egg bananas) from here are considered Thailand's best. The province works well as a stop on the Sukhothai-to-Tak route, giving you world-class ruins without the tour bus crowds.
