Buriram
Buriram has two identities: ancient Khmer heritage and modern motorsport. Phanom Rung Historical Park is the showpiece — a 10th-century Angkorian sanctuary perched on an extinct volcano, rivaling Angkor Wat in craftsmanship if not scale. Every April, the sun aligns perfectly through all fifteen doors, drawing thousands. Nearby Muang Tam is a smaller but beautifully preserved Khmer ruin with lotus-filled barong pools.
The modern side is Chang International Circuit, Southeast Asia's premier motorsport venue, hosting MotoGP and World Superbike Championship rounds. The Buriram United football stadium (Thunder Castle) draws passionate crowds during Thai League season. The provincial capital is a functional Isan town with good street food — try the local som tam and grilled chicken at the night market. Buriram is an easy day trip from Nakhon Ratchasima or a stopover on the Isan temple circuit that includes Phimai.
