Dogo Onsen Honkan is a hot spring bathhouse located in the Matsuyama City Center area of Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan. It is the oldest hot spring bathhouse in Japan, with a history that dates back over 1000 years.
History
The first mention of Dogo Onsen in literature dates back to the Nihon Shoki, a historical chronicle of Japan that covers the period from the mythical creation of Japan up to the early 8th century. The chronicle describes how a wounded egret was healed by bathing in the hot springs of Dogo. The hot springs were later used by the imperial family and the aristocracy as a place of relaxation and healing.
The current building of Dogo Onsen Honkan was built in 1894, during the Meiji period. It was designed by the architect Katayama Tōkuma, who combined traditional Japanese and Western architectural styles to create a unique and beautiful building.
