The museum is located in a traditional Japanese-style house that was once the residence of Shiki's parents. It was established in 1969 to commemorate the centennial of Shiki's birth.

The museum has a collection of Shiki's personal belongings, including his manuscripts, letters, and photographs. It also has exhibits on the history of haiku and the life and work of other famous haiku poets. The museum has a beautiful garden with a pond and a tea house where visitors can enjoy a cup of green tea and a sweet.
