Luce Memorial Chapel

Luce Memorial Chapel is a stunning example of modernist architecture located in the heart of Taichung City, Taiwan. Designed by I.M. Pei, the chapel serves as a place of worship for the students and faculty of Tunghai University, which is situated on the same grounds.

History

Construction of the chapel began in 1954 and was completed in 1963. The building is named after Henry R. Luce, the founder of Time Inc., who was a major donor to the university.

Architecture

The chapel's design is a striking combination of modernist and traditional Chinese architecture. The main structure is a concrete and steel frame, with a roof made of glazed tiles. The chapel's most distinctive feature is its towering spire, which rises 55 meters above the ground. Inside, the chapel is decorated with colorful stained-glass windows, which cast a beautiful light throughout the space.

Visiting Luce Memorial Chapel

The chapel is open to visitors daily from 8am to 5pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Visitors are asked to dress respectfully when visiting the chapel.
