Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan
Serene counterpart to the Giant Swing: a soaring hall, Sukhothai‑era 8 m bronze Buddha, and some of Bangkok’s finest murals. An easy 15‑minute walk from Khao San; open daily till 8pm for golden‑hour visits.
About
Wat Suthat sits beside Bangkok’s famous Giant Swing on Bamrung Mueang Road, a 15‑minute stroll from Khao San via Dinso Road. Step through the gates and the city noise drops away. The main ordination hall is vast and cool, lined with towering columns and golden Buddha images. In the center, an 8‑meter bronze Buddha from the Sukhothai era draws the eye; the surrounding murals reward slow looking with scenes of everyday Siam and celestial drama.
Come early for soft light and quieter courtyards, or swing by near sunset when the Giant Swing glows red and the temple drums echo. Dress modestly, remove your shoes, and wander the cloisters to find shaded corners where locals come to pray. Practical tip: it’s easy to pair this stop with Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanatdaram, just up Maha Chai Road, or with the amulet market near Sanam Luang.
Open daily 8:30am–8pm, which gives you more daylight than most temples. If you’re headed from Khao San, a quick tuk‑tuk makes sense in the heat; on cooler days, the walk shows you an older slice of the city around City Hall and Dinso’s snack stalls.
