Wat Samai Kongka
Koh Phangan’s “Heaven & Hell” temple: a glass‑mosaic ordination hall that gleams in the sun and a surreal garden of karmic scenes. Just past the island hospital toward Sri Thanu. Go late afternoon for golden light; dress modestly.
About
Wat Samai Kongka is the temple that catches your eye from the road — the ordination hall is skinned in tiny glass mosaics that shimmer green, red, and gold when the sun hits. Step through the dharma-wheel gate and you’ll find a working island wat with a playful streak and a quiet, shady courtyard where monks go about their day.
The draw for many is the “Heaven & Hell” garden: life-size sculptures that dramatize Buddhist karma — grisly punishments on one side, serene merit on the other. It’s eerie, it’s fascinating, and it’s very Thai. Wander slowly and you’ll spot small details in the scenes that locals point out to their kids.
Practical: it’s just past Koh Phangan Hospital on the road toward Sri Thanu and Chaloklum, an easy stop if you’re looping the west coast. Aim for late afternoon when the light makes the mosaics glow and the heat backs off. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes before entering shrine buildings, and move respectfully around any ceremonies.
