Wat Ratchaburana

Directly across from Wat Mahathat, Ratchaburana was built in 1424 over a cremation site. Climb the steep stairs inside the main prang for close-up views of original murals — some of the oldest surviving paintings in Thailand. The crypt below once held a trove of gold artifacts, now displayed at the national museum. Often less crowded than its neighbor.
