Wat Mahathat
About
Home to the famous Buddha head entwined in banyan tree roots, Wat Mahathat is Ayutthaya's most photographed site. The 14th-century temple was once the seat of the Supreme Patriarch and the kingdom's most important monastery. Today its rows of headless Buddha statues and crumbling prangs tell the story of the 1767 Burmese invasion. Arrive early morning to beat tour groups and the midday heat.
