About

Just off Route 1095 in the center of Pai, Wat Luang is where the town slows down. Founded in 1803, the temple pairs a handsome wooden viharn up front with a white Shan-style chedi tucked behind. Step through the teak doors and you’ll find polished pillars, a serene seated Buddha, and the soft scent of incense drifting in from the courtyard. Locals drop in to make merit throughout the day, so keep it respectful and unhurried. Early morning light catches the chedi beautifully; late afternoon is shaded, with novices sweeping leaves and the odd bell strike rolling across the compound. There’s no ticket gate here — just a donation box for upkeep — and it’s an easy wander from Pai Walking Street if you want a quiet pause between coffees and canyon runs. Look closely at the details: Shan flourishes on the stupa, carved lintels, and the mix of Lanna and local Pai touches you don’t see down in Chiang Mai. If you’ve got time, pair it with nearby Wat Klang for a quick snapshot of Pai’s small-town temple life before hunting down dinner on Rungsiyanon Road.
