Wat Chedi Luang

About

Wat Chedi Luang dominates Chiang Mai’s Old City with its towering Lanna brick stupa, partly collapsed but still dramatic. Walk the naga-lined steps and spot the ring of stone elephants; this is where the Emerald Buddha once sat before moving to Bangkok. The grounds also hold the city pillar shrine and quiet courtyards. Go early for soft light and monastery calm, or come after sunset when the chedi glows under floodlights. Expect respectful dress (shoulders and knees covered) and a mix of locals making merit, photographers, and backpackers. Easy to pair with nearby Wat Phan Tao and a coffee on Ratchadamnoen Road.
