The Giant Swing

Bangkok’s scarlet Giant Swing towers outside Wat Suthat—free to visit, open all day, and best at sunset. Pair it with the temple across the street, then graze Dinso Road’s street food. A quick tuk‑tuk or 20‑minute walk from Khao San.

About

Stand in the middle of old Bangkok and look up: the Giant Swing (Sao Ching Cha) is a scarlet frame soaring more than 20 meters into the sky, set in a traffic circle on Dinso Road right in front of Wat Suthat. Once used in a Brahmin harvest ceremony, today it’s a striking landmark and a perfect anchor for exploring the historic quarter. It’s free to visit and you can see it any time of day, but sunset is when the red teak beams glow and the temple’s rooflines catch the last light. Early mornings feel local—monks pass by, shops roll up their shutters, and coffee carts hum along the curb. Pair your stop with Wat Suthat across the street for gorgeous murals and calm courtyards, then wander along Bamrung Mueang and Tanao Road for old shophouses and snacks. From Khao San, it’s an easy 20-minute walk or a quick tuk‑tuk ride. Mind the traffic when crossing for photos—the swing sits in the center of a busy roundabout—then step back toward the temple to frame the shot with spires and sky. Simple, iconic, and very Bangkok.
