Thao Wessuwan Khao Rang Samakkhi Tham Temple
Hillside temple above Phuket Town with a giant golden seated Buddha, naga-lined steps, and yaksha guardians. Quietest at 6:30–9am; opening hours 6:30am–5pm. Pair it with nearby Khao Rang Viewpoint for sunrise or a breezy late-afternoon wander.
About
Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham sits halfway up Rang Hill in Phuket Town, a quiet hillside temple that locals visit to make merit before work. You’ll spot it by the gigantic golden seated Buddha watching over town, naga serpents curling along the stairways, and a pair of towering yaksha guardians at the ordination hall. It’s peaceful here, with drumbeats and monk chants drifting over the trees and the smell of incense hanging in the air.
Come early—doors open around 6:30am—when the light is soft and the heat hasn’t kicked in yet. Wander the main viharn to admire intricate gold-on-red carvings, then circle the grounds for shrines tucked under banyan shade. The complex is small and easy to navigate, with a short climb and a simple courtyard where families leave flower garlands and red candles.
Practical tip: it’s a 5–10 minute drive up from Phuket Old Town, and Khao Rang Viewpoint is just up the road if you want sunrise or late-afternoon views after your visit. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes before entering the halls, and keep voices low—this is an active temple first, a sight second.
