Suwankeereewong Temple
Patong’s calm counterpoint: a gold-chedi temple at the top of Phra Barami Rd where locals offer alms at sunrise. Free entry, modest dress, 5–10 mins from Bangla — come early or late afternoon for quiet photos and temple bells over the traffic hum.
About
Just before Patong’s chaos kicks in, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong (locals say Wat Patong) sits at the foot of Phra Barami Road, marking the entrance to town. Step past the gate and everything softens: incense on the breeze, temple bells somewhere in the compound, the gold chedi catching Phuket’s fierce sun. Roosters and sleepy soi dogs wander the paths while monks move between the ordination hall and kuti houses.
Come early. Around sunrise locals stop to give alms as the day begins, and the light makes the temple’s details glow — naga railings, bright murals inside the ubosot, and the stacked roofs of the viharn. It’s free to enter; donations of 20–100 THB are appreciated. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and remove shoes before stepping into any hall.
If you’re staying near Bangla Road, it’s a 5–10 minute ride up Phra Barami Road toward Kathu; taxis and motorbikes can drop you at the gate, and there’s easy parking along the side lane. Late afternoon is mellow and photogenic, but expect locked interiors outside core hours. Last checked March 2026.
