Sunset rock & Viewpoint
Koh Tao’s classic sunset perch above Sairee: a wide granite slab with big west-coast views. Take the “High Rock View Point – Sunset Point” turn-off; last 5–10 min on foot. Aim for golden hour, wear shoes, bring water and a torch — the road up is steep.
About
Walk a short jungle path and you pop out onto a broad slab of granite with the island spread beneath you — west coast, Sairee Beach, and, on clear days, Koh Nang Yuan sitting just offshore. As the heat fades and the breeze picks up, you’ll hear cicadas and the occasional longtail engine below while the sky does its nightly show of pinks and orange.
Getting here is part of the fun. From Sairee, ride or taxi up the steep road towards Mango Viewpoint and look for the “High Rock View Point – Sunset Point” sign on the left. Park before the last rough section and follow the dirt track five to ten minutes on foot. Wear proper shoes, bring water and a small torch for the walk down, and go easy if you’re new to Koh Tao’s hills — scooter rentals are about 150 THB/day and the gradients are no joke when you’re heading back in the dark.
Time it for golden hour (around 5:30pm–6:30pm) and you’ll likely find a chilled mix of divers and backpackers sprawled on the warm rock, cameras out. It’s quiet up here; leave no trace, keep voices low, and you might even hear the waves from Sairee when the wind drops. Sometimes you’ll spot a hammock strung between trees — either way, the rock is the best seat in the house for sunset.
