About

Dawn is the sweet spot here. Roll into the Old City just after 6:30am and pedal quiet lanes between lotus ponds, laterite walls and bell-shaped chedis as the first light hits the brick. Bicycles rent for 30–50 THB from shops by the gate (there’s a small bike fee at the park entrance), and the cool morning air makes the distances easy. By late afternoon the light turns honey‑gold again, perfect for photographers. Start in the Central Zone at Wat Mahathat, the kingdom’s spiritual heart, where lotus‑bud stupas and serene Buddha images sit on mirror‑still ponds. Cross the wooden bridge to Wat Sa Si for postcard views, then head north to Wat Si Chum to meet “Phra Achana,” the colossal seated Buddha whose long gold‑tipped fingers are a Sukhothai icon. If you want context, the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum sits just outside the park with artifacts pulled from these very ruins. Tickets are sold per zone, with current rates posted at each gate; allow at least half a day to cover the Central and Northern zones without rushing (last verified March 2026). The park is in Mueang Kao, a short ride from New Sukhothai, with simple cafes and guesthouses clustered around the entrance. Sunsets from Wat Saphan Hin on the western hill are worth the climb, and if you’re here in November, Loy Krathong turns the ruins into a candlelit dream.
