San Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao

Pattani’s historic Chinese shrine on Anoru Road — incense‑hazy, red‑pillared, and alive during the annual river‑bathing and fire‑walking festival near Dechanuchit Bridge. Visit 6am–5pm for calm rituals and Chinatown street life.

About

Walk down Anoru Road and you’ll smell it before you see it — coils of incense, sandalwood, and the faint tang of firecrackers. San Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao is Pattani’s storied Chinese shrine, the spiritual heart of the city’s Chinatown. Red pillars, curling rooflines, and guardian lions frame a dim, reverent hall where locals light joss sticks and leave oranges and tea at the altar of Lim Ko Niao, a protective goddess tied to Pattani’s seafaring past. Come early (around 8–10am) for quiet reflection and to watch shopkeepers pay respects before opening. If you’re here in late February or March, the annual Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao Festival electrifies the whole neighborhood: a raucous street procession carries the goddess and fellow deities to the Pattani River near Dechanuchit Bridge for ritual bathing, followed by a dramatic fire‑walking ceremony in front of the shrine. It’s one of southern Thailand’s most intense cultural moments — loud, smoky, and unforgettable. The shrine sits a short stroll from Pattani River and the old shophouses of Pattani Chinatown, easy to pair with the Central Mosque or a riverside coffee. Dress modestly, move with care around worshippers, and slip a small donation at the altar if you linger to photograph. Doors close by late afternoon, so aim for morning light or a post‑lunch visit.
