Mae Haad Pier

Koh Tao’s gateway. Ferries from Samui, Phangan and Chumphon dock here, with dive boats buzzing off at dawn. Grab cash and a coffee, then hop a songthaew to Sairee or a longtail to Shark Bay. Busy at boat times; for a swim, head to Sai Nuan or Sairee.

About

Mae Haad Pier is Koh Tao’s front door — the strip of concrete where island life begins. Step off the ferry and you’re in Mae Haad village, a jumble of dive shops, backpacker cafés, travel agents and motorbike taxis that hum to life whenever a boat pulls in. The sea here is busy with longtails and dive boats loading tanks, which makes it a great place to people‑watch with an iced coffee while the island reshuffles for the next departure. From this pier you can sail to and from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and the mainland (Chumphon and Surat Thani/Donsak) with the big operators — Lomprayah, Songserm, Seatran and Boonsiri. Dive boats head out early, ferries roll in late morning and mid‑afternoon, and the night boat ties up nearby. If you need cash or a SIM, ATMs and minimarts cluster along the lane behind the pier, and longtail skippers can whisk you straight to Shark Bay or Nang Yuan if you’re light on time. A quick ride gets you to Sairee Beach for sunset; head the other direction and you’ll find the quieter coves around Chalok. The beach beside the pier isn’t ideal for swimming thanks to boat traffic — walk 15–20 minutes south to Sai Nuan for clear water, or north to Sairee for a swim and a beer in the sand. Arriving or leaving, give yourself a buffer around ferry times; the scene gets hectic, but it’s all part of the Koh Tao rhythm.
