Mae Haad Beach
Northwest Phangan’s postcard beach with a sandbar you can walk to Koh Ma. Clear, snorkel-friendly water, soft sand, casual beach bars and massage huts. Time it for low tide and stay for sunset.
About
On the northwest tip of Koh Phangan, Mae Haad Beach is the postcard scene: clear, shallow water, soft sand, and a natural sandbar that links the shore to tiny Koh Ma. On calm days the bay turns glassy, with lagoons you can wade through and views that stretch all the way to the marine-blue horizon.
Come at low tide to walk across to Koh Ma, then slip on a mask for easy snorkeling over coral gardens just off the beach. Expect parrotfish and butterflyfish cruising the reef when the visibility is good. Back on shore you’ll find simple beach restaurants for pad krapao and fruit shakes, a couple of casual bars, and shaded massage huts tucked under casuarina and palm trees — the low-key island life people come here for.
It’s about a 25–30 minute ride from Thong Sala by scooter or songthaew. Aim for a late afternoon arrival if you want golden light and sunset colors; mornings are quieter and best for visibility. Do your bit for the reef — float over the coral rather than standing on it — and you’ll see why locals always point friends to Mae Haad when they ask where to swim and snorkel on Phangan.
