Lanna Traditional House Museum

Historic Lanna teak houses and rice barns in a leafy CMU garden. Walk raised walkways, peek inside the Chiang Mai Townsfolk and Pan‑Ya houses, and get a feel for everyday Northern life—an easy weekday escape from Nimman, open Tue–Fri 8:30am–4:30pm.

About

An open-air slice of Northern Thai heritage on Huay Kaew Road, the Lanna Traditional House Museum gathers historic teakwood homes and rice barns in a shady garden at Chiang Mai University’s Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture. You wander between raised wooden walkways, steep gabled roofs, and carved kalae finials while cicadas hum and frangipani trees drop flowers underfoot. It’s a calm detour from Nimman’s cafés just down the road. The collection includes named houses you’ll see referenced around Chiang Mai: the Chiang Mai Townsfolk House (Heuan Phaya Pong Lang Ka), the Pan-Ya House (Heuan Anusarn Suthorn), a Mae Taeng folk house, a rare two‑kalae house, plus several handsome rice barns. Interiors display traditional tools and household items, giving a feel for how Lanna families actually lived—cool, shaded, and practical. Come Tuesday–Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm; weekdays are usually quiet and the light is best early or late afternoon. The gate sits at 239 Huay Kaew Rd inside CMU’s arts and culture compound, a 5–10 minute songthaew ride from the Old City’s northwestern corner. Pair it with a coffee on Nimmanhaemin after, or swing by nearby Wat Suan Dok for golden-hour photos.
