John-Suwan Viewpoint

Koh Tao’s classic sunrise ledge above Chalok and Shark Bay. A 10–20 min scramble through palms and boulders; wear real shoes. Entry ~50–100 THB (as of 2026) includes Freedom Beach. Go early for soft light and space; sunset works too.

About

The south-end stunner on Koh Tao. John‑Suwan Viewpoint is a short, sweaty scramble that pays off with a perfect split-screen of the island: Chalok Baan Kao to your left, Thian Og (Shark Bay) and Sai Daeng to your right, and a ribbon of jungle running straight up the middle. The last stretch pulls you over boulders with the help of ropes, then opens to a granite ledge where the whole coastline drops away beneath your feet. Start at the Freedom Beach car park on the southern tip of the island and follow the signs up through palms and roots. It’s 10–20 minutes depending on fitness and photo stops, but it’s steep and can be slippery—proper shoes beat flip‑flops. Bring water and go early. Sunrise is magic and usually quiet; late afternoon has warm light and fewer day‑trippers than mid‑morning. Space on the rock is limited, so the early birds get the clean frames. There’s a small entry fee collected at the car park (around 50–100 THB, ~$1.40–$2.80 as of 2026), which also covers Freedom Beach and Taa Toh Lagoon below. Scooters can park at the base; expect a few minutes of huffing before the view opens up. On the way down, cool off with a swim at Shark Bay or grab a coconut on Chalok’s waterfront—both are within a short walk.
