Jack's Bar
Riverside shack next to the Shangri-La with front-row sunset views, cold beers, and no-fuss Thai plates. Cheap, cheerful, and packed with locals and travelers from 11am–midnight. Arrive by river boat to Sathorn Pier and walk over for the best seats by the water.
About
A Bangkok classic right on the river, Jack’s Bar is the ramshackle wooden deck tucked behind the Shangri-La Hotel in Bang Rak. Pull up a plastic chair, feel the Chao Phraya breeze on your face, and watch long-tails and ferries slide past while an ice-cold beer sweats on the table. It’s unfussy, cheap, and exactly the kind of spot locals recommend when friends ask for “real Bangkok.”
The kitchen turns out comforting Thai standards—stir-fries, curries, fried rice, grilled seafood—fast and flavorful, with portions suited to sharing. Prices stay friendly (regulars report a meal for four around 600–800 THB), so you can linger through sunset without watching the bill. Service is casual and the place fills up early; aim for golden hour to snag a front-row seat over the water or be ready to wait with a drink.
Getting here from Khao San is half the fun: hop the Chao Phraya Express from Phra Arthit to Sathorn (Central) Pier and it’s a short walk next to the river, just past the Shangri-La. Open daily from 11am to midnight, Jack’s draws a mixed crowd of office workers, expats, and travelers who know a good view doesn’t need a dress code. Come for the sunset, stay for another round as the city lights flicker on across the water.
