Chiang Mai National Museum
Chiang Mai’s story in one stop: clear, bilingual exhibits on the Lanna kingdom, gleaming Buddha images and textiles, all near Wat Chet Yot. Open Wed–Sun 9am–4pm; expect a small entry fee (~฿100).
About
A quiet, well-curated window into Lanna heritage just northwest of the Old City, the Chiang Mai National Museum lays out the city’s story with clarity. Set off Chotana Rd near Wat Chet Yot, it’s an easy hop by songthaew or Grab. Inside you’ll find bright, bilingual displays that make sense of Chiang Mai’s timeline and the people who shaped it.
Work through the galleries in order and you’ll move from Hariphunchai roots to the rise of the Lanna kingdom, the Burmese years, reunification with Siam, and the 19th–20th century modernisation of the north. Highlights include serene bronze Buddha images in the distinctive Lanna style, lacquerware, textiles, trade maps, and city plans that show how Chiang Mai grew from moated stronghold to modern hub. Labels are in Thai and English, and the narrative is easy to follow without a guide.
Practical bits: it’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm (closed Monday–Tuesday). Expect a small entry fee (around 100 THB). Bags are typically left in free lockers by the ticket desk. If you’ve got extra time, pair your visit with nearby Wat Chet Yot or the Highland People Discovery Museum across Rama IX Lanna Park for a deeper look at northern cultures.
