Bioluminescent Plankton
After dark off Railay/Ao Nang, kick your fins and the sea flashes neon blue. Join a sunset longtail with beach BBQ, then a night swim among glowing plankton. Best Nov–Apr; if staying on Railay, plan your ride — after 6pm a private longtail to Ao Nang is ~1,500 THB.
About
Step off a longtail after sunset and the Andaman turns electric. Off Railay and the Ao Nang islands, a gentle kick of your fins or a swirl of the hand sets off a galaxy of neon-blue sparks — bioluminescent plankton lighting up in your wake. Guides pick sheltered coves with little ambient light, so you can float under the stars and watch the water glow with every move. It’s pure magic and one of those Thailand moments you never forget.
Most people see it on evening trips that start with a sunset cruise from Ao Nang or Railay, often paired with island-hopping and a simple beach BBQ. After dinner, the captain slides into a dark bay for the night swim — masks on, head under, then move slowly and let the show begin. If you’re staying in Ao Nang, book a tour that includes round-trip transfers. If you’re based on Railay, plan your ride back; public boats taper off after 6pm and a private longtail to Ao Nang runs around 1,500 THB.
Visibility is best on calm nights, with clearer water during the dry season (roughly November to April). Bring a towel, a dry bag for your phone, and a lightweight rash guard if you chill easily. Don’t expect pro-level snorkeling; this one’s all about the glow and that surreal, childlike grin you’ll have on the ride home.
