Ao Leuk
Koh Tao’s easy snorkel bay: clear water, white sand, and coral gardens a few kicks from shore. Entry is 100 THB (~$2.75) via the resort gate (usually with a drink and lounger). Go early for glassy conditions; snorkel hire and simple Thai plates right on the sand.
About
Ao Leuk (often spelled Aow Leuk) is one of Koh Tao’s prettiest swimming and snorkel-friendly bays — a bright white crescent with glass-clear water on the island’s southeast side. Wade straight in from the sand and you’ll be over coral gardens within a few fin kicks, with parrotfish, butterflyfish, and giant clams easy to spot. On calm mornings the bay is a natural swimming pool; by midday, light wind can ruffle the surface but visibility stays excellent. Locals occasionally report juvenile blacktip reef sharks cruising the shallows — a quick, thrilling glimpse if you’re lucky.
It’s a 10–15 minute ride from Mae Haad or Sairee, with a steep final descent to the beach. Access is through the resort gate on the headland; as of March 2026 the entrance fee is 100 THB (~$2.75) per person and usually includes a soft drink and use of a lounger. You’ll find simple Thai plates, cold drinks, and snorkel gear for hire right on the sand. Go early to beat the day-trip boats and catch the water at its calmest; late afternoon light is beautiful for photos before the last rides back up the hill.
Practical notes: bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard — shade is limited. Confident scooter riders will be fine, but taxis can drop and pick up if you’d rather skip the hills. Stay close to shore and work the rocky edges on either side for the best coral and fish life.
