Bangkok Rooftop Bars with the Best River Views from Khao San Road
Our favorite Bangkok river view rooftop bars—how to reach them from Khao San, what to order, when to go for sunset shots, and how not to overpay a tuk-tuk.
We’re shoulder-to-shoulder on the Orange Flag boat, spray in our face and diesel in the air, skimming past temple spires and warehouses as dusk slides over the Chao Phraya. This is why we chase Bangkok river view rooftop bars: the glow of Wat Arun across the water, long-tail boats carving neon squiggles below, and that little thrill when the elevator doors open and the city unfurls like a lit-up scroll.
If you’re based around Khao San Road or Soi Rambuttri, the river is our back alley. We’ll show you the rooftops with proper Chao Phraya views, the drinks to order, when to go for photos, and exactly how to get there without melting in the heat or overpaying a tuk-tuk.
If you want even more river-facing picks after this, we also keep a running list here: Best Bangkok Rooftop Bars with Chao Phraya River Views from Khao San Road.
How to game the river (and beat the heat)
- Getting around: From Khao San, walk or tuk-tuk to Phra Athit Pier (N13). Ride the Orange Flag boat south to Sathorn (Central Pier) for the big hitters, or hop off at Tha Tien (N8) for the Old City rooftops facing Wat Arun. For Thonburi (Wang Lang), ferry across from Phra Athit.
- Best time: Golden hour into blue hour—roughly 5:15–6:45 pm in cool season, later in hot season. Blue hour (10–20 minutes after sunset) is when the river goes ink-blue and the temples pop.
- Dress codes: High-end rooftops skew smart casual (no flip-flops, sports shorts, or tank tops). Riverside indie spots are come-as-you-are.
- Budgets: Expect 300–500 THB for cocktails at most places, 600–900 THB at the glam A-listers. Add 10% service + 7% VAT where applicable.
- Photo tip: Many rooftops frown on tripods. Handhold, use phone night mode, and lean on a railing for stability. Boats paint light trails after sunset—embrace the blur.
Best Bangkok River View Rooftop Bars
Sky Bar at lebua at State Tower
A proper showstopper. We step out into a blast of breeze and a curve of river that looks like it was poured for photos. Yes, it’s famous from The Hangover. Yes, it’s pricey. But the view is a full-on amphitheater of Bangkok—the Chao Phraya bending through Sathorn, barges crawling like metallic caterpillars.
- Vibe/use case: Dress-up date night, big-occasion flex, skyline drama.
- Drink to order: A citrusy signature (the bartenders love Thai herbs—think lemongrass, kaffir lime) or a classic martini. The “Hangovertini” is their house call.
- Food: Fine-dining bites next door at Sirocco if you want to go all-in; bar snacks available.
- Price level: High (cocktails ~600–900 THB; wine by the glass ~500–700 THB).
- Dress code: Strict smart casual. No flip-flops or athletic wear.
- Reservations: Recommended for sunset; walk-ins possible late.
- Best time for views: Golden hour into night for the river bend—spectacular blue hour shots.
- Getting there from Khao San: Boat to Sathorn (Central Pier), then taxi or a 10–12 minute walk up Charoen Krung Road to State Tower. From Silom/Sathorn, BTS to Saphan Taksin then walk.
SEEN Restaurant & Bar
On the Thonburi bank with a wide, low-slung panorama—like standing on the prow of a ship. DJs thump softly, the breeze works overtime, and the Chao Phraya feels close enough to clink glasses with.

- Drink to order: Rum and tropical fruit numbers, or anything with pandan or coconut.
- Food: Modern sharing plates with a Portuguese-Thai tilt; good for groups.
- Price level: Upper-mid (cocktails ~350–500 THB; shared plates 250–500 THB).

- Reservations: Ideal for rail-side tables on weekends.
- Best time for views: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset; stay for the river traffic lights.

- Drink to order: A gin-and-lemongrass highball or a kaffir lime mojito.

342 Bar (Baan Wanglang Riverside, Thonburi)

River Vibe Restaurant & Bar (River View Guest House, Talat Noi)
A veteran perch in the Sino-Portuguese maze of Talat Noi, this rooftop isn’t fancy—plastic chairs, sea breeze, stacks of shipping containers creeping past below. But the curve of the river near Chinatown is photogenic and the prices are gentle.
- Vibe/use case: Backpacker-budget sundowner with real river life.
- Drink to order: Classic mojito or a big Leo beer sweating through the heat.
- Food: Stir-fries, fried rice, spicy salads—simple and satisfying.

Yào Rooftop Bar (The Surawongse)
Set back from the river but high enough to frame it with Chinatown’s low-rise rooftops, Yào serves glossy Shanghai glam without losing Bangkok’s grit. We come for Chinese-inspired cocktails and a vantage that layers old and new.
- Vibe/use case: Date night with dim sum bites, skyline selfies, and a sliver of river.

Sky View 360° (Grand China Bangkok, Yaowarat)
Old-school and a bit kitsch in the best way, this rotating rooftop crowns the edge of Chinatown. The river view comes and goes as you spin—half the fun is watching the city revolve with your drink.

Know before you go: river rooftop playbook
- Heat and rain: Bangkok’s hot season is no joke. We aim for 5:30–7:30 pm, then retreat to AC if the sweat wins. In rainy season, storms often blow through fast; some of the best sunsets bloom right after.
- Bills: Many upscale rooftops add 10% service + 7% VAT. That 350 THB cocktail becomes ~410 THB—sanuk has a surcharge.
- Tuk-tuks and taxis: Agree a tuk-tuk fare up front or use a metered taxi. From Khao San to Sathorn Pier should be ~80–120 THB off-peak by meter; more in traffic. Boats are the sanity saver.
- Reservations: For temple-view micro-terraces (Sala Rattanakosin, Above Riva, Eagle Nest), lock in sunset seats a day ahead. For the big guns (Lebua, SEEN), book weekends.
- What we pack: Light shirt, small microfiber towel, phone power bank, and a shawl in cool season—riverside breezes can surprise you.

Where to base yourself for easy river hops
If we plan a river-rooftop crawl, we like to sleep within striking distance of a pier—Phra Athit (N13) if we’re Khao San-side, or along Charoen Krung/Silom for quick runs to Saphan Taksin. Around the Riverside, many properties run free shuttle boats to Sathorn, which makes hopping between SEEN, Lebua, and Charoenkrung rooftops absurdly easy. If inventory’s tight, anywhere near an Orange Flag pier or the BTS at Saphan Taksin keeps your nights smooth and your tuk-tuk costs down.
A simple river rooftop route from Khao San
- Stop 1: Tha Tien (N8) for a temple-view sunset at Sala Rattanakosin or Above Riva.
- Stop 2: Boat to Sathorn (Central Pier), shuttle across to SEEN for the night breeze.
- Finale: Taxi or walk to Lebua’s Sky Bar for the blue-hour citywide sweep.
- Nightcap: If you want to dial it down, head back upriver and grab a humble beer at 342 Bar or River Vibe—less cash, more local color.
Bangkok rewards the curious. Tonight we’ll ride the khlong smells and ferry bells to one more perch, one more round, watching the river slide past like a silk ribbon. Meet us at Phra Athit pier at 5—first round’s on the breeze.
