| Better
know as 'Issan' - the local pronunciation of 'eastern'
- this is the largest region in Thailand and home
to most Thais. Lesser known as a tourist destination,
Northeastern Thailand has only over the last few
years started to emerge as a full-blown tourist
destination. Flat plains alongside a central mountain
range dominate the landscape. Bordering Cambodia
and Laos, the northeast has been visited by several
ancient civilizations, especially the Khmers,
each of which influenced the region and forged
it into one of the most culturally unique regions
on the Kingdom. The regions historical sites and
museums abound with the artifacts of many cultures.

Alongside a unique culture, Northeastern Thailand offers
a range of unique handicrafts which include silk production.
Visitors to the area can buy a wealth of souvenirs,
gifts and keepsakes to remember their visit by. The
northeast is also famous for its spicy cuisine - earthy,
tangy food which is a delight to eat and a dreadful
shame to miss. Few places in Thailand have such a genuine
feel of community. Northeastern people are probably
the friendliest in the nation. |
