Thailand's largest island needs little introduction — Phuket is the Andaman coast's anchor, with beaches running the full western shore and infrastructure to match every budget. Patong is the party epicenter: Bangla Road's neon strip, rooftop beach clubs, and a nightlife that rivals Bangkok's. Kata and Karon offer a slightly calmer beach scene with better swimming. For luxury, the Surin and Bang Tao stretch has five-star resorts and Boat Avenue's upscale dining.
Old Phuket Town is the island's secret weapon — Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in pastels, excellent local restaurants (go for mee hokkien Phuket and oh tao), Sunday walking street markets, and a café scene that keeps improving. The Big Buddha viewpoint above Chalong is worth the drive for Andaman panoramas. Phuket is also a diving hub — the Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Richelieu Rock (world-class manta and whale shark encounters) are accessible from here.
Beyond the main beaches, Phang Nga Bay day trips, Phi Phi Island tours, and the quieter east coast (Cape Panwa, Ao Yon) offer escapes from the Patong crowds. The Thalang National Museum covers the island's tin-mining and pirate-fighting past, and the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in the interior is a responsible wildlife encounter. For food, Phuket's Baba cuisine — a Thai-Chinese-Malay fusion unique to the island — is a highlight, especially at the old-town restaurants.
